Composed solely of psyllium mucilage (Indian plantain or ispaghul), which contains 10 to 12% polysaccharides, it has numerous benefits.

Its role in constipation is one of the best known; when it reaches the intestine, it forms a kind of gel that will weigh down the stools and speed up transit. It can be used for dogs with chronic or occasional constipation problems (it takes 12 to 24 hours to see an improvement).

Surprisingly, psyllium is also very effective in cases of diarrhea; it absorbs water from the stools and gives them consistency (this is a mechanical action). It is very useful for treating fecal incontinence but also when intestinal disorders are caused by medication.

This brings us to a truly little-known benefit: psyllium relieves many symptoms (other than pain) related to IBD, as soluble fibers play an important role against inflammatory bowel diseases.

Soluble fibers or prebiotics have a crucial action for the microbiota. Indeed, these are non-digestible carbohydrates that reach the large intestine as they are and then serve as "food" for good bacteria (probiotics), stimulate their growth, and activate the metabolic process of useful bacterial strains.

Psyllium also helps regulate triglyceride and cholesterol levels. Even if dogs are less affected by hypercholesterolemia and hyperlipidemia, it can happen to them. It even plays a role in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes!

Not recommended in cases of intestinal or esophageal stenosis or after gastrointestinal obstruction.

It is always advisable to seek veterinary advice before giving a complementary food.
